For galaxies and other RGB-based objects I favor the color palette yielded by a DSLR , but I also prefer the excellent structural detail that is captured by a CMOS camera. In this image of the Andromeda Galaxy I used RGB data from a Canon 70D Full Spectrum Mod collected in 2017 together with luminance data from a ZWO ASI1600MM Pro collected in 2021. The Canon was mounted on an Orion 8” f/3.9 Newtonian Astrograph (FOV 1.61 degrees X 1.07 degrees), while the ASI1600MM was mounted on a William Optics FLT132 f/5.05 (FOV 1.52 degrees X 1.15 degrees). There have been very few clear nights here in Monterey, CA in the last few months and even fewer with good seeing. Of the more than 20 hours of luminance data that I collected, only about 3 hours were of good quality, with HFR 2.1-2.4, and were used in this image.

I used this same DSLR+CMOS approach in 2019, but with only 45 minutes of luminance data. I liked the results back then so I wanted to try it again, this time with more and better luminance data to enhance the detail and reduce the noise. The look of this image is different than those made with just DSLR or just CMOS data, or combining CMOS RGB and Ha narrowband data (an approach I have often seen). For me the subdued colors of this DSLR+CMOS approach give the image a feeling of presence and depth, especially in central region of this galaxy.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
